It can be done but is something of a chore.  Connector tips are available 
from Scott Mockry.  There is a Lisle tool which easily removes the 
connector tips from inside the connector plugs.  Feeding the wire through 
the insulator is a real pain.  In principle the job is easy.  In practice 
you might wish you'd gone ahead and done the splicing.
