[s-cars] I must be insane.Q

I must agree with most here and say that the Ur-S is one of the most
reliable and fun cars to drive. Certainly much better compared to my type44
5ktq.

However, during my first year of ownership in 1999, I did question my
buying the car. I had to replace the transmission due to the dreaded pinion
bearing failure of many '92 cars. I chose to replace it with a late model S6
tranny with at least the better main shaft. I also had to replace the dual
mass flywheel as it was out of spec. Besides the usual wear items that so
many on this list have had experience with, I'd still say that for the
money, these cars are extremely tough to beat. Yes, they can be finicky and
require little annoying repairs frequently. But, this list is full of
valuable resources and people with the answers to save you money and time. I
drive the car hard but take care of her too. After nearly 80k mi and 6
years, it has never left me stranded and has brought me more than enough
smiles, especially when I get to embarrass many of the so called "fast" cars
on the road. And this is only with the equivalent of the MTM 1+ chip. I do
have suspension and wheel mods, RS2 manifold, BPV, silicon hoses, and
Stromung to name of a few. The ease of modifying these cars just sweetens
the deal. Look at what kind of horsepower some of these guys are running.
Better yet, look at some of the mileages people have turned, some well into
the 200k mi range. When the weather turns crappy, the car becomes even more
fun(with the appropriate tires) Quattro is what got me into Audi's 17 years
ago and it has never let me down. Mountain passes? No one can touch you,
especially at elevation.

Like Dennis, I get to drive the newer Audi's all the time with my "other"
job. While they are great cars, none of them have the soul, the character,
the feeling of a drivers car(relative term) like my S car. Sure mine has
been modified and I'm comparing it to a stock car, but I know what mods it
would take to make me happy and then I'm still left with a car that may need
its motor dropped to replace the turbos. You get the idea.

I think the key is to be proactive with known failure items. For example,
why wait for that leaking turbo after run pump to finally blow when you can
spend $100 to keep the car running for another 100k mi and from stranding
you? Same scenario goes for the fuel pump, the leaking fuel line, the spark
plugs and boots, the bomb, the ignition switch, etc etc. Replace things as
you have the time and as they are necessary. I certainly wouldn't buy the
cheapest S car you can find. Those cars are almost guaranteed to give you
buyers remorse and require significant $$$$ to get it back to a decent state
of repair. The reason some cars are in such a state of disrepair? Because it
has been neglected in some way, shape or form probably for quite some time.
I always get a kick out of the people who write and say that such and such
is making all sorts of noises and/or leaking but hasn't blown yet... What?
Just repair the car now. Keep the car well tuned and in a state of good
repair. Maybe I'm somewhat of a perfectionist but it certainly has paid
dividends for the last 17 years of driving Audi's. If you are looking for
the reliability of a Toyota or Honda? Probably not going to find it in an S
car. But then again, you wouldn't be reading this list if you were looking
for a driving appliance either.

 Just MHO!
