[s-cars] '95 S6 Autocheck Display died

Hi All,
 
The autocheck display on my '96 S6 just went dead.  The entire display has a soft orange glow but no symbols or characters appear at any time now.  
 
My mechanic had a used display from a wrecked A6 that he tried, it was dead too.  Could be the used display is bad too.  I understand there is another circuit (autocheck?) that feeds the display.
 
Any tips for trouble shooting this would be greatly appreciated.
