I went the 6-speed and centerforce route.

I am chipped on the stock turbo though, until I stop driving in the city
so much. Then I will go RS2.

>From what I understand of 01E transmissions, it is the narrow first
gear
failure which is most common, and only prevalent on cars bearing
turbochargers - not at all a problem with the European 4.2L S4s and
narrow
1st gear. The steep angle of the torque curve puts much greater stress
on
the gear than higher torque but a flatter curve, hence the gear can flex
and
all of a sudden you have teeth which are not meshing correctly and
galling
or breaking the gear.
The solution was to install a larger 35mm 1st gear (up from 28) in the
affected cars beginning in Europe in 94.5 model revision and in the US
with
the 95.5 S6. Unfortunately, that means there are very few 5 speed
transmissions in the states with the wide 1st gear, so the 6-speed swap
(which is a perfect bolt-in) is very common.
