alternator in my '92 S4 died yesterday.  had to get the car towed.
i was driving across a long bridge.  the alternator warning light came
on.  i kept going, hoping to make it to the other side of the bridge before
the car stopped.  just as i got to the first exit on the other side, the
car died.  power steering and brakes were fine during this time, so i don't
think it's a broken belt.  i didn't see anything obvious when i looked under
the hood briefly.

so it looks like i need to replace the alternator and/or voltage regulator.
don't think it's the battery, as the battery is a 1 year old optima red top,
and if it were the battery, the alternator should have been able to keep the 
car running.

any tips?  should i get the alternator rebuilt?  buy a new one?  where?
what's a good way to search the s-car-list archives?
