Ditto all of the below. If the only thing that broke was the plastic piece
that extends/retracts the mast, merely replace this piece. For some reason
- unbeknownst to me - I think that this task would not be overly
challenging for you Rolf ;-)

Not that tough. I did mine the hard way, removing it from the car,
cleaning and re-lubing the gears, etc. I figured after 10 years it was
probably time. But it is reportedly possible to change the mast from
outside the car. There were instructions to that effect that came with
the replacement mast. I think you need a helper to turn the radio on
and off while you yank the old one out and rethread the new one.
Removing it from the car is a matter of pulling the trunk lining aside
and removing a screw or two and the coaxial connector. Still not a big
deal.
If my experience is any guide, the weak point on these units is the
mast, not the internals, which look to be well designed and sturdy.
