To reduce oil pressure to the sleeve (or ball) bearings. It's said this,
keeping pressure at something less than 50psi for example, can be
particularly important to the newer ball bearing turbos. So for all the
honchos running xx-50W "racing" oil, be sure you have things really warm
before hitting the rpms in the morning.
