Heh, while I of course admire your (atypical for an an engineer) philosophy Bob, remember that his is a '93 or whatever, not a '95 like ours.  I think it is a distinctly different whine he's likely getting, the 'pinion' whine I'd imagine.  Dunno whether that whine would withstand continued hammering or not.  

Best bet is, as you've already likely been told, install a 6 spd. (no joke, cost is same as repairing your 5 gang).  Or find out from those more knowledgeable (than esp. me) if you can in fact just hammer on what you got and not worry, as Bob is and I was on my '95.
