Agreed-somewhat... Horsepower in the A8L can almost be be brought up to S8
power levels via a chip on the > 2001 models. You can buy all the
components to convert an A8 suspension to Euro S8 specs for a few grand. 18
in wheels still shouldn't get you north of $5k. However, the A8L had a
longer wheelbase and is a bit more heavy than the S8, so driving dynamics
are not as good IMO. However, I don't believe the A8 was available in NA in
standard wheelbase configuration during 2001-2003. So, you have to buy the
S8 for standard wheelbase.

Kind of got us there, me thinks.

My $0.02 on the S8 is that it is very underwhelming. A good buddy has a
2000 4.2 40V A8L which I have driven quite frequently. We recently went to
drive an S8 in the area as he thought (and frankly so did I) that the delta
between an A8 and S8 would be similar (albeit to a lesser degree) to that
between our vintage A6 and S6. Not even close!! Other than the sport seats
in the S8 and the taughter suspension, my seat of he pants measurement
recorded no difference at all.

At nearly $10K more than an A8L, he is staying put with the caveat that he
is trying to source some sport seats.

Regards,

Mark
