Lee,

You're right, you won because you showed restraint, an
attribute given far less than its fair dues. On the
other hand when the time is right, a little play can
be a lot of fun. But knowing when to call it quits is
the key.

Of course, not all STi and Evo drivers are kids
looking to race. Of the three people I know that have
one or the other, two are over 60. Only one is a kid,
he's 19. And even he shows restraint far beyond his
years, essentially keeping the dramatic stuff to the
drag strip. The strip kinda defeats the purpose of the
Evo, but at least he's not doing anything too foolish
on public roads.

I had an interesting run in with an old school Civic
Si about six months ago. I was driving a '96 Mustang
Cobra with some mods and was approaching a red light
at about 10pm on a Saturday night. To my left was this
yellow Si that looked like it had been prepped for
autocross. The driver was revving his engine like he
wanted to race. I looked over at the driver to see if
he was serious (I mean what was he thinking), but he
wasn't looking in my direction, he was too busy taking
a hit from his one hitter! The light turned green and
I accelerated at a normal pace, about half throttle.
He on the other hand floored it and all he got was
massive wheel spin through first gear and into second.
He was at my side and as I said I was only at half
throttle. I'm thinking this guy's a complete moron,
he's trying to race me and he's stoned driving a 15
year old civic. I will admit that my restraint wained
by the third stop light and once I hit second gear I
let the hammer drop and just left him with his wheels
spinning. I backed off at that point and let him pass,
I figured that's what he wanted anyway, and it
probably wasn't safe to encourage him to go any faster
than he was. So i suppose that's sort of restraint,
but only partial.

Alex, having too much damn fun in the car world.
