[s-cars] Low fuel gauge level

I too had a flakey fuel gauge, but my fix was not at all invasive. Somebody
on this awesome list suggested that the float/sending mechanism is nothing
more than a variable resistor that may be gummed up. This same person who
resides in anonymity inside of my well pickled brain further suggested
running some techron through the tank. Well, I did and voila, all is well.
I'm not saying that you may not have to go in there as Chris wrote, but in
my case I got lucky.
Regards,
Mark

Harold,
I had the same problem with one of our S4's.
Problem is the wire that goes to the bottom of the float, it moves and
this movement causes it to eventually start to break. Soon your guel
gauge will cease to work.
I removed the float and repaired the break in the wire, 18 months later
and it still works fine.
To gain access to the float you will need to remove the trunk carpet.
Remove the round cover that is held in place with 3 screws.
Now you can disconnect the wiring to the pump and the fuel lines
Using a screwdriver and a hammer tap the round clip and remove the clip
Now you can lift out the float....if memory serves me correctly.
