[s-cars] NAC? - Towing Capacity Figures

Hi all,

Here is the information from '96 A6 and S6 user manuals:
- The A6 (V6) have a trailer capacity of 2000lbs with brakes on the trailer,
1455lbs w/o brakes, 110lbs tongue load.
- The S6 have no trailer capacity mentionned.
Besides, I have to mention that the A6 Quattro have a towing limit of 0mph,
0 miles when lifted by the front or rear wheels only while the S6 have a
towing limit of 30mph, 30miles which is the towing limit of the older Audis
Quattro (90Q20V, 4000Q, 5000Q). So I suspect the S6 trailer capacity to be
closer to a 200TQ than a A6/V6 as the engine/drivetrain is closer to the
200TQ.

BTW, Mark, if all you want is an excuse to have another car just for you,
just buy another Audi and use the excuse that some people on the Audi lists
have up to 5 Audis for their own use and you have only two. I'm sure an S6
avant with some good quality trunk mat is able to carry all you want.

Vincent.

Thank you gentlemen for all the responses. I did consider a hitch for the
S6 but I am really looking for something that will tow with ease and into
which I can throw salty wetsuits, vests, 2x6s, etc. without cringing. It's
also my way of justifying the extravagance of a second vehicle in a one
person household.

Regards,

Mark

There's probably nothing wrong with towing with a stock S6, but once you
start hogging it out and EGT's are already near the limit and you're pumping
26-30psi into a motor and asking it to pull a lot, something's gotta give.

My friend's F-350 mit Powerstroke turbodiesel has several programs that he
can plug in via the OBD-II port, the more radical ones explicitly say not to
attempt towing due to higher EGT's and risk of hurting the motor. I've
noticed in my car that EGT's get higher even with just some luggage and a
set of wheels and tires, much less a trailer.
