You're talking about the display which shows station information and the
check system icons, right?
I had a similar problem with the display on an '89 200 back when. It would
show more or less random blocks of garbage. The solution was to pull the
instrument cluster and clean the contacts inside the IC. That particular
IC had a back cover which came off with several (about 8?) hex head
Phillips screws. When the cover came off the dirty/corroded connector was
exposed. This may well also be your problem. Gentle cleaning of the
connector parts followed by treatment with Stabilant 22 may take care of it
for you.
