Mark,
long time ago in my '89 200TQ I laid a 2x4 across fender channels, 
bought a suitable steel hook with a loop in a local Home Depot, 
connected it under the flange of the heater box in its centre and used a 
big pry bar as a canteliever.

I did not butcher my heater box with a steak knife. My internal 
meticulous purist got the better of me so I did it right.
