[s-cars] Afterrun relay? Thermoswitch..Rust in a trim?

Ivan,
I hope you have been out saluting the Stars and Stripes as well as
going nuts over the
afterrun system. :-)

Check pages X1105 for the afterrun circuit as Fuses, Engine cooling
system. And X1098
for the Aux Relay Panels 1 and 3. It shows a fan relay in Aux panel
1 (J69) which is
part 8D0 951 253 A, I believe. And the J155 Turbo coolant pump
control module is part #
447 965 571 A in Aux relay panel 3 in passenger side kick panel. I
know, these pages are
listed for the '96 Canadian S6, but I can't find any others. The
afterrun relay is in the passenger
kick panel slot #5 and should have a part # to help identify. That
is most likely the faulty part
but I don't know why the fan isn't running also. This is a battery
killer if this relay doesn't open
after the 5 or 10 minute run time since the fan and pump will
continue to run until power is exhausted.
This circuit operates approx 5 minutes after shut down if the thermal
switch (F98) under the coolant pipe
reaches 106-112C. Check this one by shorting the connector to make
pump and fan run. That 112C
is difficult to reach as you indicate, but it shouldn't be the
coolant boiling point.

This Afterrun relay was also used in the 5000tq so it is a common part.

The coolant fan control operates stage 1 on at 92-97C and off at
84-91C and stage 2 on at 99-105C
and off at 91-98C. Perhaps there is some added resistance in the
circuit from corrosion on connectors,
etc. Make sure the fan turns freely and is not requiring excessive
current to start. It should operate well
below the coolant boiling point with the engine running. I believe
you replaced this switch at the bottom
of the radiator?

I have assumed that this testing has been taking place without
airconditioning since a/c operation will
cause the fan to run also.

The trim clips start to rust under the trim after a while. I don't
think there is a cure except replacement.

I didn't see any follow-up on your engine speed sensor failure. Was
it a sensor failure ?

I would look at engine mounts and the bolts fastening the
transmission flange to the engine for the
source of your "kick". Sounds like something is moving--apparently
your thoughts since you looked
at transmission mounts and driveline.
