Tom,
I wouldn't call Alpine and Boston exactly high-end, although that is
very respectable stuff.

I have a few problems with the setup you describe- subs in the rear
deck, choice of amplifiers (or no amplifiers), and speaker setup.

The subs in the rear deck (are they free air?) are not the best for
sound- requires significant reinforcement of the rear deck so there
isn't extraneous vibration, free air subs IMHO don't give you that
nice, tight, accurate bass (gotta do acoustic suspension for maximum
SQ). If they're not free air subs and they're mounted that way, that's
even worse- now you're using the speaker in a manner in which is was
not designed.

Alpine amps IME tend to be rather bright, I haven't had a nice warm
sounding amp from them yet. They are well made and durable and they
don't lie about their output, but there are better sounding amps out
there. I've liked a pretty old product for a long time- the a/d/s line
of amps- clean output, nice warm sound, fairly compact.

A friend of mine has an S6 with a Zapco powering the mains (MB Quart
competition separates in the front and top-end coaxials in the rear
deck), Eclipse 10" aluminum sub powered by 500W Memphis in a sealed
box, Alpine head unit, sounds awesome.

I've also heard Dynaudio 3-ways in the front with nothing but a sub in
the trunk and the rear speaker grilles maintained for bass venting
into the passenger compartment.

I've actually heard plenty of systems that blow away the Bose.

Taka
