[s-cars] Stereo fatal pop!

Patient= 95 S6
Symptom= usual stereo "pop" when turning on system. Regulated by turning on  
slowly (no volume initially). Last week the system "popped" exceptionally 
loudly  when switching from one CD to another with no other external input. The CD 
 changer has not worked since.
It has power, and displays "00" in CD readout. FM stereo still works  fine.
Any usual suspects or "fixes"?
