Dwell Question: I think of dwell as the length of time that the spark is generated (this goes back to my old points, capacitor and single coil youth). Under our current ignition system, i.e. Crank Position Sensor, ECU, POSs and individual coils, what controls the spark dwell? It seems to me that the ECU just sends a trigger signal to the POS and something in the design of the POS circuitry (sp?) creates the "dwell", i.e. a time lag But then again, I'm a Civil Engineer.

Yes, progress, but, I wouldn't challenge 'German Engineering' withour a
thorough understanding of the details. Maybe it's just not for me, but keep
us informed!

Chris: From pg. 3/9 of an later 1.8t Audi B5 wiring diagram (and a 41/4 of
a later Jetta IV 1.8t Bentley), my interpretation of the pinouts are:
1 = hot to primary coil
2 = secondary coil ground
3 = hot signal from the ECU to the POS
4 = POS ground
Now if it wasn't for that nagging "dwell" issue suggested by Mark S., this
looks like a winner to me. (Sounds too good to be true - replace all the
coils and the POS for a fraction of the cost of going with old style OEM
parts).
Hey. Progress!! (except for those nasty Bremi recalls -which I am sure
won't happen again).
