[s-cars] the latest on my shut off problem.....

Since the 2113 code has popped up, it's possible you've got a
sheared key on the crankshaft sprocket that drives the timing belt.
This has happened to a number of listers.
A good description of this problem (on the Audi S2 engine
which has the hall effect sensor in a distributor) is at:
http://www.picotech.com/auto/audi.html
So you might want to verify that the marks on the camshaft
sprocket, crankshaft sprocket, and flywheel TDC mark can be
aligned simultaneously.
The comment that the CamPS is not needed after starting as
mentioned in the web page linked above may be somewhat misleading.
If the CamPS output disappears completely then the ECU may
go into a limp mode, possibly with a waste-spark configuration
(a spark every crank revolution). I've been meaning to verify
this on a scope but haven't got around to it yet.
If the CrankPS pulse moves outside of the the CamPS window
with the engine running, then the ECU will shut things down.
This is consistent with what's described on this S2 web page.

Subject: [s-cars] the latest on my shut off problem.....
Hi guys,
ok, first of all, thanks to everyone who've been sending me suggestions
regarding my intermittant shut down problem. Lots of folks seem to think I
have a ground problem, which could be but I have what could be another hint.
Yesterday for the first time I couldn't get the car started right from the
get go. Usually it fires right up and runs for some random amount of time
and then decides to shut down.
After cranking it for a while listening for relays, checking voltages etc it
eventually did re-fire. This time I got error codes ! 2113 or CPS!
Hmmmm.... I can see why a CPS would prevent a start but could it also be the
cause of it dying on me once running ? I thought that I read somewhere that
once the car is running the CPS is no longer part of the equation. What say
you ??? I've also heard that a potential faulty ground could trigger the
2113.... 8-(
...
tom.
