I first remembered reading about this when BMW came out with their v8 engines.  What was that, some 10 or so years ago?  Anyway, the main advantage was the alignment of the cap to the rod after the PM rod was cracked into two.  You have thousands of little peaks and valleys that fit together to ensure a perfect alignment.
