[s-cars] Fuel Pump R&R Hint Request

Dave,
As you may remember I recently replaced mine. I didn't have the tool which
made it very difficult. My only problem now is that my gas gage isn't
showing full when the tank is full. It stops just under the half mark. I
need to get back to it and fix that. I assume the float is hitting
something although I noted in researching some sites that one Audi guy
suggested that after replacing the pump you need to recalibrate it by having
the wires attached and moving the arm from the float up and down. This
seems strange to me but I'll test this theory soon.
Be sure the tank doesn't have much fuel (mine had too much) and of course be
careful about producing a spark. I suggest working on it outside where
there is lots of ventilation because the gas fumes are pretty strong.
Neoprene gloves are suggested but in my case the gas was too deep in the
tank so the gloves were of little use. I probably absorbed a little too
much gasoline so I've been drinking a lot of beer to soak it up.
Good luck. Let us know how it works out.
Bob, in der big thaw in Edmonton.

Subject: [s-cars] Fuel Pump R&R Hint Request

S-gruppees: I have borrowed an "official" fuel pump carrier removal tool
(with the drive "socket" pre-broken so I won't have that worry to concern
me). I have a good idea as to what needs to be done to remove and replace
the existing fuel pump. However, any hints, e.g. how to orient the tool to
hit the three clips the first time, no smoking, etc. etc., would be
appreciated. I am going to replace whatever is in the tank now (VDO,
Pierberg, Bosch???) with a new Bosch 091 G pump to see if I can make my
RS2-based pinging go away. If not, I am moving on the Bosch Motorsport 044
pump - either in the tank or in-line, using the OEM pump as the low pressure
supply pump.
