Fred,

In my experience, with the 968's this is also seemingly concentrated
to the early models.    My late 95 968CS had a very quiet
transmission, though it only just ticked over the 100k mile mark
(160tkm) in my hands..  IN contrast a 92 and 93 that I drove both had
noisy transmissions.

The problem is due to an improper assembly preload on the bearing or
something like that - so even if they improved their process at some
point (94ish? 95ish?) it still stands to reason they might have let a
few out that would be succeptible to the problem (especially on
Mondays or Fridays, LOL :)  )
