Dave,
Yes it is a bit of a struggle but you will get it out (encouragement). And, yes you can unclip the pump from the carrier. I wasn't able to but once I got it out I saw how it is done (after all you do that to put the new pump in). There are two clips, one on either side. They need to be pushed away from the pump and then the pump will pull out. Try to push the pump down into the carrier as you push on the clips. I think if you can push down on the pump, out on the clip, and then pull up on the pump you can release one side. Then pushing the other clip away from the pump and pulling up on the pump should do it. The problem is that you are working with one hand only. I got my carrier out by putting a crow bar in one of the notches of the plastic carrier and giving the other end, which was through the opening, a little rap. I reinstalled it in a similar way. Robert Meyers sent me some pictures, I now see Fred is forwarding them to you. For some reason my clips looked a little different than the ones in Robert's photos.
Good luck,
Bob

Subject: Fuel Pump Removal Help Request (please)

Okay. I've tried but I can't undo the Chinese puzzle in the bowels of fuel tank. Probably doesn't help that my borrowed 3214 fuel pump wrench is broken (can't use a rachet on it). At this point, I am ready to quit and button it all back up (tail between legs), buy a new 3214 wrench and try again in a few weeks. (BUT I know some of you have done this job without the wrench).
I ran the tank down to the warning light (15 L left) but then I had to add a bit to get home. So right now the fuel level is just at the top of the pump carrier. The top of fuel pump that is in there appears to be white plastic (unless that is part of the carrier). My new in a box Bosch pump is all black (no metal - all plastic).

For the orientation of the fuel level sender, the black fitting for the evaporative emissions should be at the 6 PM position. This should pump the letters VDO (and part numbers) running exactly "north-south".

At this point I am wondering why I can't just unclip something and remove just the fuel pump and not the carrier.

Oh, yeah, as for hints, a) open fuel tank (filler) to remove vacuum and b) do something to drain the high pressure line because when you crack open the banjo fitting you will be "surprised" at how much fuel is in the line. (Duh).

I hope some Rubic's cube Guru can tell me how to unclip just the pump. <whimper>

Dave (frustrated but not quite defeated) F.
