[s-cars] AAN Oilpan Removal

Hi Douglas:

Removing the oil pan is a PITA IMO. Perhaps easier with your car on a lift
but I'm not lucky like that. There are about 30 hex head bolts that you
have to remove from just about every conceivable angle. You will need two
oil pan gaskets. You will also need an o-ring for the oil pick up. You
have to remove this in order to get the second gasket off. Removing the
front subframe bolts allows the subframe to sag so that you can get the oil
pan out. I had to loosen (not remove) the rear subframe bolts and push down
with the crook of my knee on a 4 foot cheater bar to get enough "sag" in the
subframe to get the pan out. It was about 20F in my garage at the time of
this ordeal so perhaps I am unjustly bitter about this but...

Drop me a line if you have any questions at all.

Regards,

Mark

P.S. Oh and the joys of getting everything (block, pan, two gaskets) lined
up so you can start putting those 30+ bolts back in. Fondest of memories!!
I ended up using some zip ties to hold everything more or less in alignment
while getting a couple of bolts in.

At the suggestion of several members, I am thinking about removing my
oilpan. As I recall, the sub-frame needs to be moved to do so which
can be done by removing the two forward bolts, right? What happens
when one does so? What is the sub-frame supporting that might come
down as well at that point?

Inquiring minds want to know.
