You'll have to pull the pan to diagnose the rod bearings, not to mention fix them. I don't understand why they would want to pull the head instead. That's a bigger job than the pan for sure.
Rod knock on an AAN is VERY uncommon, sounds like you have an engine rebuild in the making...
