Since i work as a ski race coach during the winter, and since i put allot of
miles on my cars during this time of year, i did a ton of things to gather
all the fuel mileage possible. I started with cleaning the K&N filter,
installed a new Bosch univ. O2 sensor (even though the old one scoped out
OK), performed a motorvac and intake/top end cleaning service, flushed the
crankcase and refilled with the typical 10w-30 Valv. full synth. oil, raised
tire pressure (225/55/16 dunlop wintersports) to about 85% of max load psi
and topped off with Sunoco ultra 94. I headed to Sunday River Maine this
past week for the Junior Olympic competition, traveling interstates and
using my GPS as a milege guide. Oh yeah, the car is chipped and has a
Baileys diverter valve, that's all. Anyway, I averaged 63mph for the entire
trip, which includes short bops from the condo to the slopes and a run into
town for some micro brew. All told, I averaged 23.2 mpg. Previously I was
getting 21-21.5 on the highway alone. I'd consider this an improvement.
OTOH, I typically am very judicial about stomping on the throttle. Through
the entire trip, i think i boosted through a few gears perhaps twice,
several other times in 5th to make a pass.
I hear of others getting much higher numbers, but are they GPS verified or
are they chipped? BTW, the speedo is nearly dead nuts on with the GPS, but
the odometer was off a good deal. There was a 2 mile discrepency after 100
miles or so. Anyway, if i was truely a MPG nut, i'd use my old jetta turbo
diesel... but that aint fun!! ;-)
