[s-cars] Wheel/tire performance - how different between wheel sizes?

I'd like a little re-assurance I'm doing the right thing here.  I'm
about to get my '93 5 spoke 16x8's refinished.  Before I do, any
opinions about the relative performance of a high-end low profile tire
in a 16" size vs. a 17" or 18" tire?  I doubt it's that big of a
difference, certainly not enough to warrant switching to bigger wheels
considering the roads I have to drive on around here (NH).  But before
I make a move - opinions?

BTW - I got an Eibach/Bilstein Sport setup, 2B camber plates and Hap
bar on the way.  I expect to put 225/50/16's on the stock wheels.  I
could go to 245/45/16's, but I believe that would actually put tread a
little outside my fenders, slinging all kinds of bad stuff up onto my
beautiful brand new pearl coat.  Would there be any perceptable
difference between these 2 sizes?

OK -  since I got your attention - I'm leaning toward Goodyear F1
GS-D3's.  Or maybe Michelin Exalta PE2's.  Any BTDT?
