You didn't say which mods you've got, but if you're seeing 23 psi, you're
obviously at least chipped. I have the MRC Stage 2 chip (I see up to 22-23
psi) and 91 Octane was the best I could find in my recent trip through CA
(92 is all I can get here in OR, anyway). I didn't have any problem, but
the weather was also cool. With a chip, I don't think going below 91 would
be prudent, especially in warmer weather.
Besides, these cars aren't about restraint! If you weren't going to boost
on the highway, you could've just bought an A6 mit slushbox (yuck). Might
as well buy decent gas, and get your money's worth out of it!
