Dave,
How many miles do you have on your car? I know my coils went out at about
120k miles. I don't think you are going to get much better from an
electronic device buried in such a hostile environment as your valve cover.
I mean if my second set of coils lasts me until 240k miles I will be very
happy to ante up anoth $600 for a new set.

Subject: [s-cars] Coil Replacement Options?
S-gruppees: I have posted this same question at least once before. The
question is whether it would be possible (and cheaper (??)) to replace
our coils with those from say a 2.7tt or 1.8t. The newer ones are coil
and spark plug lead all in one unit, however, I think they are still
triggered by the ECU via the POS.
The reason I ask is I am beginning to think I have a boost-related miss
that I would imagine is based on one or two coils deciding they are due
for early retirement (age plus years of service = 179 K (km)). It would
seem that going to the modern design COULD be better. (And yes I know
about the coil recall issue that the 1.8t engines went through - that
was a manufacturing issue NOT a design issue).
Just thought I'd ask in case somebody has already investigated this
possibility.
