[s-cars] "Multi-function" switch replacement--advice needed

Hi all:

I am in the midst of replacing the "multi-function" switch on my car
('93 S4). This is the turn signal/cruise control/brights switch.

I have managed to get the air bag, steering wheel and upper steering
column trim pieces removed, but I can't get the lower steering column
trim off. It appears to be held on by four screws, only one of which is
even remotely accessible--the other three (lower) screws are covered by
the lower trim, so that I have no idea where the screw heads are! It's a
bit of a catch-22; the screws are covered by the very piece I need to
remove!

Can anyone who has done this job before please tell me where these
screws heads are and how to get at them without destroying the trim
piece? Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks!

Frustrated,

Marc
