My two parents, three siblings and I made do with a VW Microbus and an Audi
FOX.

The FOX had good heat but was a bit tight for the 6 of us while the Bus was
the opposite.

Good times...

You have not lived until you keep an ice scraper handy to clear the inside
of the windows.

As for minivans vs. wagons vs. sedans...

I am sad to report that putting our 3 children, ages 1, 3 & 5, into their 3
carseats in my wife's Dodge Grand Caravan (see, it's hers not mine) is a
much easier endeavor than accomplishing the same task into my Audi Avant or
Sedan.  Especially in the rain or snow.  And the Grand Caravan really does
not drive poorly for what it is. The 17" wheels help.
