[s-cars] Dreaded won't start ...

Thanks to everybody for their helpful suggestions.  I tried to send this
back on the 21st ... so here it is now!

The problem was a shorted #5 coil.

The fuse under the passenger's floor by the ECU was blown.  After a lot 
of searching without finding any fuse blown - and no, I didn't look 
under the floorboard at the ECU - I ran out of time and took it to a 
nearby shop.  More $$ later than necessary, I felt ignorant but it's running
again.

I guess I was lucky it didn't blow the fuse when I was on the road, it
was considerate enough to wait until it was home in the garage ...

Now Vag-Com can find the engine control unit just fine!  Mutter, mutter ...
