I wouldn't convert.
I had lots of problems with stiff bowden cables on my old 1989 Avant.
I also had no defrost on both S6s this autumn. The problem was brush dust
in the flap motors. I fixed both cars by dismantling and servicing the
motors. One car had two failed motors - the other had just one.

If you're prepared to buy new flap motors, then you can look forward to
another 10 years of trouble-free flap control.
