The fit on the Avant is not quite as straightforward as advertised.
Your analysis is correct, as Bill states below.  Cutting off the  
horizontal
portion of the handle is the solution.   Or get a eurospec handle.

I asked Alex Von Gerbig and he was ignorant of any issues with the many
installs on Avants, but I can see no way you would not have an issue.

Guy in Germany sez,  oy, Ja, just cut the handle.  The German handle  
is different
since there are several variants of the continuous light panel for A6  
models too.
