This is exactly how I lauinch as well, Dave. It is by far the best
technique with these cars, IMHO. I have only run 1.90 short times, so no
1.7's or anything, but having watched Jim launch at the strip, along with
Ben (I don't know his last name but he also runs 12's with a 5 cyl turbo) I
have to believe the rear ends are up to the task...at least the non
torsen...I don't know about the torsen, though.
Ben Howell... with the 2.5 urq. He should be coming to our dyno gathering
on Saturday. I just told him tonight to contact Jim about setting up a time.
My best has been a 1.8 60ft... but I know I was leaving a lot on the table
because the clutch wouldn't cope with things. I guess I'm just concerned that
getting 4000lbs off the line might be asking too much from the drivetrain.
Everyone I've talked to (including Ben) are running high power through cars
1000lbs lighter. I guess it's time to start stuffing power in the UrQ instead.
Incidentally I had a rear end in an '83 Trans Am snap on me at the strip one
time. The best part was that we just called AAA and they came down the
staging lanes with the tow truck and we were on our way for free :)
Ah... 1983 GM products. The "dawn" of "lifetime engineering." That new
body had the first generation of drivetrain products that were supposed to be
designed for 100k miles. The rear diffs fell a little short... typically
failing at 30-40k with no track time at all...
Anyway...
I'm sure I'll get the guts up sooner or later. I'll take it to the strip
with a spare diff in hand... and cut it loose and see what happens.
Dave
