[s-cars] Newbie UrS6 owner has some questions....

Eric,

A couple of comments.

1. Clutch - Mine finally went after about 135k, but I drive it pretty
hard...a few trips to the dragstrip, etc. I think 135k for a clutch is
perfectly acceptable. As far as the bearings go, usually the first sign of
this is when you start to her a sound coming from the bellhousing area when
the clutch is pressed in and it goes away when the clutch is released. That
is the state of my '89 200 wagon right now. The other thing I have noticed
about Audis is that for the most part, given that all other systems within
the clutch are functioning normally, the release height can tell you a lot
about when the clutch is getting worn out. The higher the release height
the more worn it is.

2. Searching - What I did one day, and it took awhile, was to go back
through all the months of the S-car list, click on the archives month by
month. Then I copied over that page to MS Word. Now I just search all the
titles using the search function in MS word and then when I click on the
title it automatically takes me there since it is stored as a hyperlink in
Word.

Hope that helps.

...that have undoubtedly been answered on multiple occasions, but I can't
seem to get a handle on searching the #@#%&* archives!

Ahem.

1.) Lower door trim. Yup, the rust kills 'em, and they need to be replaced.
IIRC, it's a 0.5 hour DIY once you have parts in hand.

a.) Where does one get the trim, and for how much?

b.) Has any kind soul been brave enough to do a write-up to describe the
removal and *proper* installation of the new kit?

2.) There's a hose barb on the top of the BPV (I think that's what it is.)
Mine has no hose. I am ASSuming it's a vacuum line connection, but I can't
find it's mate, nor a disconnected hose. The car runs great, so I'm not too
worried.

3.) I love the way this car drives. Solid and smooth, just like all my other
Audis have been. Except above 2.7k rpm, then I get the real "go." :) No
question, just an observation. Oh, yeah - 24mpg at 80mph, through the high
plateau and over the Rockies. 1200 miles.

4.) I was warned that these cars have a slightly higher appetite for
clutches than the normal Audis (my '90 80q has 200k on the clock with the
original clutch, so even at 2x wear, I'm happy.) I know what a slipping
clutch feels like (BTDT with Chevy product) but what about bad bearings -
throwout and input? How do those things feel when bad? How long can you let
them go before repairing?

5.) Brakes. I know the ones on this car are going to need replacement in
another year or so. I want to upgrade some, but not the full $2.5k for the
993tt kit. Slotted, high-quality rotors, and street pads that are relatively
aggressive (require bed-in, still work well when cold, but better than the
soft stock pads). I do not care about noise or dust. Noise tells me they
work, and dust washes off.

6.) Searching the archives. Can someone PLEASE give me some sort of pointers
about searching - I can do a parametric search with the best of them, but
these archives really have me scratching my head. I must be doing SOMETHING
horribly wrong.

I'm nearly one of you now. Once I complete my trim strip apprenticeship, I
will have fully joined your dark cult.

:)

Eric
