The disadvantages:
 18" wheels weigh more, harder to lightweight 18s, esp. at a decent cost
18" wheels are more prone to bending due to the shorter sidewall, esp. on 
the crappy roads here
18" tires cost more
18" wheels often cost more as well
 The advantages:
shorter sidewall- better steering response, often a stiffer sidewall, better 
handling
looks better subjectively
more brake clearance
