I think there is real merit to the possibility of tie rod ends.
I've bought two quattros new (4KQ and S6 Avant) and have rebuilt the
suspensions in both. On the 4KQ at 75K miles I replaced not only the
bushings, struts and springs but also every tie rod end in the entire
car. Not cheap but it made the suspension as good as new with no
clunks.
On my S6 I've replaced the bushings, struts and springs. It handles
better than new but there is some clunking. I added 2B camber plates
but cannot say that they contribute to the clunking. We've talked with
Ken and Andrew and have tightened, retightened, replaced, etc. but
have not fixed (or changed) the problem.
