[s-cars] Spark Plugs

Great question.

When I first bought mine... I had that chronic lifter noise for about a year. Then one way a mechanic (who sported himself as an Euro-car enthusiast) changed the oil with Redline. He said (cuz I didn't actually witness this) that he was able to rev it up for a while and then the lifter noise went away. That was 70,000 miles ago. I don't know what exactly happened that day, but I doubt it had anything to do with the label on the oil.

Since then I have been running regular (whatever is on hand) motor oil. Kendal, Castrol...whatever. And when my oil is low, I buy whatever is on the shelf at the gas station wherever I might be. Engine runs great at 125,000 miles.

I really don't have much to say about whether or not a "bad" oil exists, but I do wonder about lifter noise. I have read that high performance oils, like Red Line, can actually reduce engine noise vesus Mobil 1. I have been using Mobil 1 since the day I got the car and I have always noticed at least some excess ticking coming from the engine. Has anyone had this sticky lifter problem and solved it (reduced the noise) using a certain oil or an oil additive?

  Matt

I don't actually run Safeway brand oil. But truthfully... I couldn't tell
you what is in there right now. I just keep it clean and topped off.
No-name brands are just repackaged name brands anyway. I don't think
there is a motor oil manufacturer who makes "bad" oil and then re-packages
it. I am sure there are differences...I've just never seen any direct
evidence of it. Still, I feel better too about pouring in a quart of
Castrol versus the no-name brand from the gas station.
