The car ran quite nicely on the Leavenworth run.  There were a couple of
"stumbles" but I am not blaming the coil packs (yet)p-could be my wiring.
  One thing that I saw before the trip and during was my "Pep Boys"
 (acutally Canadian Tire for me) 1/4" split plastic wire loom is melting.

 Not good.   

One of the cars on the Leavenworth run was a 3.2TT coupe (with the 6
 spd DSG tranny).  This car has plastic wire loom that is capable of sucking
 up some heat without problems.  I have asked at a "tame" dealer for info  
on this loom material but nothing shows.  Anybody with a source to
 Wurth, etc. that may show this non-melting wire loom?
