Larry,

I can attest that acetone in high concentration does indeed lower the 
octane rating.  I discovered that very late one night coming home from the 
lab at grad school about 1961 or so when I found that the '58 beetle had 
already had the reserve fuel lever flipped to the reserve position.  I used 
what was handy to get me to where I could buy some fuel for it.  A gallon 
of acetone...  Well...  It most definitely ain't a good auto fuel.  ;-) I 
suspect that somebody has been peddling acetone as some sort of oil of snake.
