[s-cars] Window won't go down

Douglas:
Your situation is similar to one I experienced, but did not have the
additional variable of assy/disassy of the door as you cite.
My window would sometimes not move. This was in the down position as I
recall and was intermittent - could never repeat on demand. Car was then
new to me so I went to stealer with S6 equipped service writer (have since
gone independent, where the lead tech and shop owner both drive urS6s).
They said they couldn't prove/duplicate, but their experience suggested need
for new motor assy (~$200-300 IIRC list) which I gladly paid after leaving
my window open for a couple days in the airport parking garage. This fix
has been 100% reliable for the last 4 years since the repair. The reason I
think it relates to your story is because your one touch feature is not
working. If you listen carefully to a working one-touch window, as it moves
up it will reach the top, and then after the glass stops at the top of the
track you will hear a subtle (inside door) click before upward force halts.
Within the motor assy is a switch that is toggled when resistance is
encountered - that is what you hear. This switch enables the one-touch
feature, and when broken disables reliable window operation. It's one of
those annoying $400 problems that result from over-engineered but
insufficiently tested nylon plastic sub-assemblies.
My one touch window is one touch unless I interrupt it with a 'stop' click,
at which time it will exhibit up/down/incremental operation. The way to
re-engage one touch is to manually run it up till this barely audible click
occurs. It is then one touch again. Superstition being what it is I use
the driver's door - not the window -- to grab parking tickets from the
machine at the airport. On my way home I use the window cause if it ever
stuck open again I'd at least be heading home.
Good luck
