Unfortunately, as you suspected, my problem lies in the tensioning bit.
I'll try to dismantle it so I can photograph what went wrong, but
basically, it's got far too much mechanical slop. This allows the idler
wheel to move up and away from the belt (in the direction of the
radiator), and because of the angle, one edge digs into the belt. The
other edge (radiator side) is actually in free space.
I ordered another tensioner from the dealers - GBP171.16 (I think that's
around USD325). I should get it tonight.
