Sorry for the delayed response... been a little busy.

Correct... to bolt up a Garrett requires using the KKK turbine housing. Even then it is not a true bolt on, as you will need to make up oil and water lines... and change the turbo to MAF hose.

Fuel pump... I believe it is a myth about the fuel pump. My stock fuel pump supplies enough fuel to make 440whp, and maintain a 12:1 afr to 8000 rpm. You do not need to mess with the fuel system *yet*.

Injectors... If you run the 50 trim/stage 2 turbo with RS2 injectors and software, you will be able to get about 335whp. If you add an FMIC, you will see 360whp (100whp on a Mustang Dyno). Been there, tested that.

An RS2 EM would be a good idea. Saying that you need it on anything "more" than a K24 isn't exactly accurate. When you run the p!ss out of a car equipped with the stock EM, you will notice that it will glow bright red right between #4 and #5. An RS2 EM will glow less, and it will be spread evenly along the whole EM. There are 2 reasons why this happens. 1st, the stock EM doesn't flow very well. The RS2 improves this situation. 2nd, the size of the turbine housing, wheel, and exducer on the K24 are very small. This increases the backpressure in the EM, and adds to the heat buildup problem. A turbo that can flow more freely on the exhaust side will reduce the heat in the EM.

Boost threshold... The 50 trim with the stage 2 wheel is very similar to the RS2 turbo, in terms of low end response. It will be making a lot of power by 3000rpm, and will not run out of steam on the top end as soon as the RS2. This is at 5-6000 ft above sea level.
HTH,
Dave

Subject: Re: [s-cars] installing a hybrid turbo

Dave, thanks for the info.

I had thought about going this route when I imagined a bad turbo in my car.
But being able to bolt it up to the existing hardware would be a definite
plus. I am assuming that the T3/T4 stage 2 .50 trim is NOT going to bolt
right up unless it's a KKK-hotside-housing hybrid. Is this correct?

Besides higher flowing injectors, and a pump that will feed them, what other
hardware would be required? (Assuming oil/water lines and MAF->turbo
hose hardware is necessary for the turbo install to begin with.) I ask
because a rumor was circulated that an RS2 EM is required for anything
"more" than a K24, or there may be valve burning at #5.

And the final question is about driveability. At what RPM does the boost
start, and when do you get into the "meat" of the turbo's range?

Thanks - the reading has been quite entertaining!

Eric
