Here are some posts that I have in my Evernote files that may be helpful:

Hi all
My 94 S4 6 speed has a shudder in the driveline at slow speed around
20-30 km/h. The more accelerator I use the worse it feels but once
speed builds it smooths out completely and has no trace of vibration.
It feels like just under my seat and as such points to the
driveshaft/ gearbox area. Gearbox feels completely normal. It
absoutely does NOT feel clutch related. The driveline is shrouded, as
you probably know, and before I start pulling things apart.... has
anyone else lived through this issue and can cast me some pearls of
wisdom. I guess the options are; universals, hanger bearings, gearbox
mounts, shaft balance. Have I missed anything?

Sam, My money is on the CV joint at the front of the prop shaft. The
grease
dries out and it starts making metallic clanking noises when you take
off at
WOT in first gear and a little in second. In higher gears and speeds,
you
cannot hear it. Unfortunately this part cannot be purchased separately.
You
may be able to pack some fresh CV grease in there and be ok. I have not
done
this myself, but have had it done on the 95 avant by a local mechanic.
The
prop shaft service requires removal of the exhaust, but you probably
knew
that already.

I'm still betting 99% on the carrier bearing but you can buy the CV
joint separately. It has a Porsche part number: 92333203200.

Hi all just a follow up on this item from August...
Yes as usual you guys were bang on the money. Front CV which when I
think about it was worn and was probably "locking up" under high
torque and thus making the shaft move around in the hanger bearing.
The Porsche part # is spot on.
My what a stupid place to put the handbrake adjuster! Thought I'd best
do it while I was there.
So thanks all what can I say...
You guys run rings around the rest, four of them I think.
