Brian,
I agreed, and still do, that the lens makes a difference.  I agree 100% with your assessment that the lenses do make a difference.  But you never discussed the reflectors.  The reflectors are identical in the euro lights, with the exception of the bulb holders.  All parts on the inside of the housings are interchangable... BTDT... and I have euros and US spec lights.
 
In my experience, it is not worth the cost or effort to convert, considering the minor improvement in performance... especially when you can swap in HID lows for $200.
 
Clearly, the move to euro lights in the UrS provides a benefit nowhere near that of a type 44, or UrQ euro light.

I have to disagree on the reflector issue, DOT vs
Euro.

First of all, I have had Euro C4 lights in Edwin much
the same as yours, relayed 100w lows and fogs and 130w
highs. I also found out the hard way that these hi
wattage lights deteriorate the aforementioned
reflectors. 

The nice flat beam and 45 degree angle on the right
side of the road that's present on the Euros is
non-existent on the DOT's, just blurry light. There IS
marked difference, I know because I too thought I
could get by cheap when I got my avant. I bought new
Euro lenses and HID's and installed on the DOT's.

Bright light yes, nice flat cutoff no. Now I have
Euros and will never go back.
