[s-cars] V8 Diff swap

I guess it should be pointed out that the failure happened at 7000+ ft above sea level... so the required hp/torque to ruin it may be under 400.
Also, the failure occured during a practice "launch" to try test the improved performance of my new clutch, compared to my old Centerforce. I seriously doubt a failure would ever occur if used "normally." My launches never consisted of dumping the clutch... they were gradual. But it was still enough to send gear pieces through the side of the diff's case.
I actually just reinstalled my old stock diff. It's working fine, but I have yet to try a real aggresive launch... and quite possibly won't. I think I'll save the dragstrip runs for a lighter car.
I hear you on the aftermarket diff... but I don't think I'm going to go there. I'd rather blow up a rear diff than a CRB... the diffs are cheap. Plus, subjecting a Torsen rear diff with God knows how many miles on it to such abuse... one would expect it to be "for a limited time only." Mine was fine until I started playing around at the dragstrip.
I just think that that level of power, combined with a 4000lbs piggy, is asking a bit much. That's a lot of inertia.

Do you think the 440lb-ft. of torque caused the failure?
I wonder what is the intended design limit of the Torsen diff?
Have you switched to a heavier-duty clutch-type diff? I like the Eaton electromagnetic diff that
is advertised in Mustang/Camaro circles- I wonder if that one can be adapted to an Audi application
if you have a custom housing.

SAE corrected figures were 440ish hp, and 440ish torque at the wheels. Because of the debate on correction factors, I ran it at a dragstrip at a lower altitude than Denver (2800ft)... based on the trap speed, the hp calculater indicated 455hp at the wheels.
I think it's safe to say "over 400 at the wheels."

Dave-
How much hp/torque are you running that killed your Torsen?

Bolt in for the UrS. I have heard that in big HP Audis, the Torsen can fail, can anyone confirm this?Aren't you running a BIG turbo, Mark?Taka
