The whole diff has to come out... housing and all.  It isn't too bad of a job, but does require you to drop the rear subframe a bit.  Total effort is about 3 hours... but could be a bit more if you have a stock exhaust.
 
Regarding your PS:
Now wait a minute... you're going to replace the rear "locker" diff with a Torsen unit... but you want to know if you can replace your center Torsen unit with a "locker" center unit?  That seems counter intuitive to me.

Ok, so my mechanic (yes mechanic, I don't climb under cars to much anymore) 
wants to know what to do.
Since I don't wanna pay much for the job, I wanna tell him.

Do we replace just the diff itself, or the whole diff and housing ?

Any write ups on this job. Some advice ?
