I'm sure your memory is correct, its the information thats wrong.
Despite Audi World's historical mythology V8's did NOT, EVER, even in an alternate universe come equipped with a 3.89 differential.... They didnt come with iron blocks in 91 either.
The North American ETKA says they didnt. The Euro ETKA says so also.
And yes I know that there is a former V8 owner on one of the AF lists who swears his car had a 3.89.
He is mistaken.

Beg to differ, IIRC, there was also a 3.89:1 rear diff for early
automatic V8s. We need 4.11 to 1 Best to confirm the turns it takes
either by turning the input shaft and counting the output turns or vice
versa. If it is tad MORE than 4, then you have the right one; under 4
its the wrong one. The consequences of installing a 3.89:1 diff are
very very bad.
Count once, install once. Forget to count, install twice.
