either Road & Track or European Car recently reviewed an audio system
which just plugs directly into your existing head. this box it
addresses equalization (e.g. Bose), adds an aux input (e.g. iPod or
sat radio) and provides clean preamp-level signals out. this would
allow one to keep your existing head and have decent power amp and
speakers connected to it. it was claimed that no wires were spliced or
cut.
